Music

Singing is at the heart of East Herrington and all children receive weekly singing lessons from a music specialist. All children have access to a range of wonderful musical opportunities as they travel through our school.

Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects usthrough people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratoryand challenging. In our schools., music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and through the love of listening to friendsand fellow pupils performing. Thesheer joy of the music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengtheningthe shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school. ( Music Model Curriculum 2021)

As well as carrying out Music lessons based on the National Curriculum children at East Herrington will be offered opportunities to learn to play an instrument. They can take part in violin lessons in year 2 and when they reach KS2 are offered the opportunity to play flute, clarinet, cornet, violin, piano, keyboard, harp, drums and guitar.  This will lead onto children being able to take ABRSM exams which is a huge achievement for primary aged children.

The school has its own rock band which meets on a Wednesday after school and has a fabulous choir.

The choir are very busy all year round. They sing in local and national competitions and support as many local charities as possible. In 2022, they became the  North East KS2 Choir of the Year for the second time as they had previously won this in 2019. East Herrington Choir have regularly taken part in Sunderland’s City Sings and been lucky enough to have won this 8 times. They have also reached the National Final for Barnardo’s Choral Competition many times being runners up in 2016 and also taking part in the online event in 2022 and the final at Birmingham Symphony Hall in 2023. They have also sang regularly at the National Music Festival in Birmingham and sang at The Royal Albert Hall Junior Proms in 2016.

Whilst we strive for excellence, we also make sure that all children get a wide range of musical experiences and ultimately make sure that enjoyment and a love of music is at the heart of everything we do and that our school offer is available to all pupils.
