Attendance Policy

At East Herrington Primary we believe that school attendance is a very important factor in the attainment and life enrichment opportunities available to our pupils and, as such, our Attendance Policy reflects this.

In 2013 the DfE issued guidance to schools that prevents pupil absence during term time being authorised except in exceptional circumstances.  Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) are currently included in the Sunderland City Council’s Attendance Code of Conduct but have not previously been used as a sanction.  EHPA was informed on Friday 20th June 2014 that from September 2014 FPNs will be issued to those reaching trigger levels.  Please see below for an extract from the letter sent to all Sunderland schools informing them of the change:-

“As you are fully aware, attendance at school by children and young people is essential in order that they benefit fully from the education to which they are entitled.  Absence from school, whatever the cause, disrupts learning and will impact negatively on the life chances of our children and young people and therefore our community.  You know that Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) are currently included in our Attendance Code of Conduct but have not previously been used as a sanction.  It has been agreed that from the new school year these will be used, where appropriate, to assist in our continued joint endeavour to reduce unauthorised pupil absence from school.”

We have now updated our policy to reflect these changes. Please read the current policy alongside the Sunderland Code of Conduct and read the Fixed Penalty Notice FAQs for more information.
