Sing While You're Winning! (posted on 11.02.2016)

Congratulations to the EHPA choir for coming 2nd in the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition 2016!

After a long journey down to the Festival Hall in London on 9th February 2016, the choir performed their competition piece, ‘Castle on a Cloud’, for the judges before singing the crowd favourite ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ at the public concert in the evening.  The children were a credit to the school throughout the whole event and we couldn’t be more proud of their fantastic achievement!

Thank you to all of the families that travelled down to London to support the children, and a HUGE thank you to everyone that took part in fundraising for the trip!

Gold for EHPA! (posted on 05.02.2016)

The Great Active Sunderland School Charter has been developed to be a celebration of a school’s contribution to four key areas including PE, sport, physical activity and its role in the community.  The Charter provides a measure of a school’s performance over these four key areas.

Mrs Diamantidis, PE co-ordinator at East Herrington Primary Academy, has worked closely with a range of School Sports Organisers to ensure that our school receives the best possible physical activity opportunities that will engage and motivate all children. This includes:-

  • School Games Organisers (School Games Mark) for which East Herrington received the Gold Award
  • Change4Life and the Lifestyles, Activity and Food programme (LAF)
  • Co-ordinating a wide and varied range of extra-currciular clubs that include cheerleading, dance, Zumba and football
  • Participation in a range of Sunderland School games and tournaments across all year groups

We are pleased to announce that East Herrington Primary Academy has been successful in becoming the FIRST school in Sunderland to achieve the Great Active award and reach the gold standard.

Pupil Premium Awards 2016 (posted on 05.02.2016)

EHPA has received a letter from Sam Gyimah MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Childcare and Education, congratulating us on winning a local award in the key stage 2 category of the Pupil Premium Awards 2016.

The school has been chosen to receive this award in recognition of our hard work towards a sustained increase in attainment for children eligible to receive pupil premium funding over the past 3 years.  We are 1 of only 7 schools in Sunderland to be recognised in this way.

In the letter addressed to Mrs Hodgson, Sam Gyimah MP says, “It is clear that you and your staff have provided your disadvantaged pupils with a good start in life and prepared them well for secondary school.  I would like to congratulate your governors, parents and pupils for their hard work and success, and thank you for your leadership in making such a difference to the future success of your pupils”.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection, the school was praised for the time and support invested in our pupils and we are really pleased that these efforts have been recognised by the Department for Education.

The Choir is Heading to London! (posted on 05.02.2016)

The East Herrington Primary Academy Choir has reached the finals of the Barnardo’s School Choir of the Year 2016 competition to be held at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank on Tuesday 9th February 2016.

Our pupils love to sing and it is the backing of their families, friends and the local community that has given them the confidence to enter this national competition.  East Herrington Primary Academy Choir will be one of only two state-funded schools competing against 18 junior choir finalists from across the UK and Ireland to become Barnardo’s School Choir of the Year 2016. The winner will be invited to sing at an upcoming Barnardo’s Young Supporters’ Concert.

The children are very excited about the competition and have held a cake sale in school to raise money towards the cost of the coach journey to London.  Friends of the School have very kindly agreed to match the money raised to make the money stretch a bit further.

As a school we are extremely proud of our pupils’ achievement and hope that this will be an experience that the children and their families will never forget.  As the only school in the northeast to have reached the finals we are looking forward to flying the flag for Sunderland!
